UV Belongs at the Coil
HVAC UV gets sold two very different ways, and only one of them holds up. The strong version is coil sanitizing: a UV-C lamp mounted inside the air handler, aimed at the evaporator coil and drain pan, running continuously. Those surfaces are wet whenever the system operates, which makes them the one place in your HVAC system where microbial growth reliably establishes. Continuous UV exposure prevents that biofilm from forming.
The weaker version is air sterilization — the claim that a lamp in the duct meaningfully disinfects the air rushing past it. The problem is dwell time. Air moves through a residential duct at hundreds of feet per minute, so any given particle spends a fraction of a second in the lamp field. Germicidal effect depends on intensity multiplied by exposure time, and that exposure time is very small.
So we recommend UV for what it does well and we say plainly what it does not do. If your goal is capturing dust, pollen and dander, that is filtration, not UV. If your goal is keeping your coil clean and killing the musty smell that comes out of the vents, UV is a genuinely good tool.

Recurring Musty or Dirty-Sock Odors
The smell that hits for the first few minutes after the AC kicks on almost always comes from microbial growth on a damp evaporator coil. Cleaning it works until it grows back, usually within a season or two. UV at the coil is what breaks that recurrence cycle, which makes it the most satisfying use of the technology.

Coils That Foul Quickly
Some systems, particularly those with a history of high humidity exposure or poor drainage, grow biofilm on the coil fins fast. That film traps dust, reduces heat transfer measurably, and drives up power consumption. UV keeps the surface clean between services, which protects both efficiency and the service interval.

Chronic Drain Line Clogs
Condensate drain clogs are typically biological — algae and slime, not mineral scale. A lamp positioned to illuminate the drain pan reduces that growth substantially, which means fewer clogs, fewer overflow float trips, and less risk of the ceiling stain that a blocked drain eventually produces.

Households With Mold Sensitivity
For occupants with documented mold allergies or asthma, keeping the coil free of growth removes one recurring source. It should be paired with good filtration and, where relevant, humidity control — UV alone is one part of a strategy, not the whole strategy.
Doing It Right
Clean First, Then Install
UV prevents growth, it does not remove existing buildup quickly. We clean the evaporator coil, blower wheel and drain pan thoroughly, then install the lamp to hold that condition. Skipping the cleaning is why some UV installs seem to do nothing.
Correct Placement
The lamp needs line of sight to the coil face and the drain pan, adequate clearance, and a position that does not put UV directly on flexible plastic components or wiring insulation. UV degrades plastics over time, and a badly placed lamp creates a new problem while solving an old one.
Safety Interlocks
Installed inside the sealed cabinet with a service switch, so the lamp cannot operate with the access panel open. UV-C is harmful to skin and eyes on direct exposure, and the interlock is not optional.
Annual Lamp Replacement
UV-C output declines well before the lamp stops glowing, so a lamp that still lights may be doing nothing. We replace lamps on schedule during maintenance visits so it does not quietly become decorative.
