The Right Technology for a Mild Winter

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse. In summer it moves heat out of your house; in winter it moves heat from the outdoor air into your house. Because it is moving heat rather than creating it, it delivers substantially more heat energy per unit of electricity than any electric resistance heater can.

The classic objection to heat pumps is that their capacity falls as outdoor temperatures drop, so they need backup heat in genuinely cold climates. That objection is close to irrelevant in the Phoenix Valley. Our heating season is measured in weeks of real demand and rarely dips far below freezing, which places heat pumps squarely in the range where they are at their best.

What that means practically: one piece of outdoor equipment instead of two systems on separate lifecycles, no gas line required, no combustion, no venting, no carbon monoxide risk, and a single maintenance relationship. For Valley homes without existing gas service, it is nearly always the correct answer.

What Goes Wrong, and Why It Gets Misdiagnosed

Heat pumps share most components with a conventional AC, but the parts that make them heat pumps are the parts that get diagnosed badly.

    Stuck or Failed Reversing Valve

    In the Valley the reversing valve holds one position for eight months straight, then gets asked to shift on the first cold morning. Sometimes it does not, or it shifts only partway and bypasses refrigerant internally. The symptom is a system that heats weakly or blows cool air in heating mode, and it gets misread constantly as a low refrigerant charge. Diagnosis requires reading pressures and temperatures on both sides of the valve, not just putting gauges on and looking at a number.

    Defrost Control Failures

    When the outdoor coil frosts, the defrost board reverses the system briefly to melt it clear. A board that never initiates defrost leaves the coil icing over until capacity collapses; one that never terminates properly runs the auxiliary heat repeatedly and quietly triples your power bill. Both are board or sensor faults, and both look like something else from the thermostat.

    Auxiliary Heat Strips Running Constantly

    Electric heat strips are supposed to be backup that engages only when the heat pump cannot keep up. A thermostat configured for a conventional furnace instead of a heat pump will energize them on every call for heat. The heat feels fine, so nobody notices until the bill arrives. This is among the most common and most expensive misconfigurations we correct.

    Low Charge That Only Shows in Winter

    Heating mode is far less forgiving of a marginal refrigerant charge than cooling mode. A system slightly low on charge cools acceptably all summer and then heats poorly in December, which leads people to conclude something broke over the fall. Nothing broke — the deficiency was always there and winter simply exposed it.

    Compressor Wear From Year-Round Duty

    A Valley heat pump does full summer cooling duty plus winter heating duty, so it accumulates more annual runtime than a straight AC. Everything that matters for a Phoenix air conditioner — clean coils, correct charge, healthy capacitors, adequate airflow — matters more here, not less.

The Cheapest Fix in Heat Pump Ownership

A remarkable number of the heat pump complaints we investigate turn out to be thermostat configuration rather than equipment failure. Heat pumps need a thermostat that understands heat pump staging: when to run the compressor alone, when to bring in auxiliary heat, how long to wait before doing so, and what to do during a defrost cycle.

Install a standard conventional-system thermostat, or configure a smart thermostat with the wrong equipment type, and the system will still produce heat — it will just do it the expensive way, energizing resistance heat strips on every call. Homeowners rarely suspect the thermostat because the house feels comfortable. The evidence shows up on the utility bill a month later.

We check the thermostat configuration on every heat pump call, verify staging behavior against the actual equipment, and set the auxiliary heat lockout appropriately for our climate. It takes a few minutes and it is frequently the single most valuable thing we do on the visit.

Straight Answers About Heat Pumps

Are heat pumps good for Phoenix?

Very. They are most efficient in mild winters, which is exactly what the Valley has, and the same equipment cools all summer so you replace one system instead of two. The caveat is that they run hard through our summers, so maintenance matters as much as on any Phoenix AC.

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in heating mode?

Usually a stuck reversing valve, a failed defrost control board, low refrigerant charge, or a thermostat set for the wrong system type. Brief cool air during a defrost cycle is normal; more than ten or fifteen minutes is a fault.

What is a reversing valve?

The component that redirects refrigerant flow to switch between heating and cooling — literally running the AC backwards. In our climate it holds one position for eight months and can stick when winter finally asks it to move.

Why is my power bill so high with a heat pump?

Usually auxiliary electric heat strips running when they should not be. They draw several times the power the heat pump does, and a miswired or misconfigured thermostat can energize them on every call for heat. Correcting it is inexpensive and can be worth hundreds of dollars a season.

How long do heat pumps last in Phoenix?

Ten to fifteen years, similar to a conventional AC here, since the compressor does the same summer work. They accumulate more annual runtime because they also heat, which makes annual maintenance more valuable, not less.

Can you convert my gas furnace and AC to a heat pump?

Yes, and it is a common changeout when the AC is failing and the furnace is elderly. You end up with one system instead of two, with heat strips or the existing furnace kept as backup in a dual fuel setup. We run the numbers both ways before you decide.
