The Valley Has Both Humidity Extremes
Phoenix has a reputation as a dry heat, and for most of the year that is accurate to the point of discomfort. Winter indoor relative humidity in a heated Valley home routinely falls into the single digits — drier than a lot of deserts, because heating air lowers its relative humidity further. The result is cracked skin, nosebleeds, static discharge on every doorknob, and shrinkage gaps opening in wood floors and cabinets.
Then monsoon season arrives. From July into September, dew points climb dramatically and the same house that was arid in February starts feeling sticky at 78 degrees. If your air conditioner is oversized — very common here — it satisfies the thermostat quickly and shuts off before removing much moisture, so the house is cool and clammy at the same time.
These are opposite problems requiring opposite equipment, and most Valley homes only ever address one of them, if any. Getting both right is the difference between a house that is technically at 76 degrees and one that actually feels comfortable at 76 degrees.
Whole-Home Humidification
Installed at the air handler and controlled by a humidistat, so the whole house is addressed rather than one bedroom with a tabletop unit and a daily refill chore.
Bypass Humidifiers
Water flows over an evaporative pad while the furnace runs, with a bypass duct routing air across it. Simple, inexpensive, and low maintenance. The limitation in the Valley is that it only adds moisture while the furnace is actually running — and our furnaces run very little.
Fan-Powered Humidifiers
Adds a dedicated fan so the unit can operate independently of the furnace blower, delivering more capacity and working even during our long stretches of mild weather when the heat rarely cycles. Usually the better fit for a Phoenix home.
Steam Humidifiers
Generates steam directly and injects it into the airstream, independent of heating operation entirely. The highest capacity and the most precise control, appropriate for larger homes, very dry conditions, or protecting instruments, artwork or fine woodwork.
Humidistat Control
Automatic control based on measured indoor humidity and outdoor temperature, so the system adds moisture without pushing it high enough to cause condensation on cold window glass. Set-and-forget rather than a dial you have to remember.

Oversized AC Is the Root Cause
Moisture is removed only while the coil is cold and air is moving across it. A system sized 25 percent too large satisfies the thermostat in short bursts and never accumulates the runtime that dehumidification requires. The house gets cold and stays damp. This is the most common reason a Valley home feels clammy in August.

The instinct during monsoon is to drop the setpoint to 72, which makes the house cold and still damp while your bill climbs. Fixing the humidity lets you sit comfortably at 77 or 78 — the comfort gain comes from the moisture, not the temperature.
