Phoenix heating season is short and mild, and that is exactly what makes it unreliable. A furnace in Minnesota runs continuously all winter and any developing problem announces itself early. Dirty Flame Sensor
The single most common no-heat call. The flame sensor is a thin metal rod that confirms a flame is actually present; if it cannot sense the flame within a few seconds, the control board shuts the gas valve for safety. A microscopic oxide film — invisible to the eye — is enough to break that signal. The symptom is a furnace that lights, runs for five to ten seconds, and shuts down, sometimes retrying two or three times before locking out.

Failed Hot Surface Ignitor
The ignitor is a brittle silicon carbide or nitride element that glows white hot to light the burners. Thermal cycling makes them fail eventually, and they usually fail without warning. Symptom: you hear the inducer motor spin up and the system go through its sequence, but nothing ever lights. It is an inexpensive part we stock on the trucks.

Pressure Switch and Inducer Problems
The inducer motor pulls combustion gases through the heat exchanger and out the flue, and the pressure switch confirms it is doing so before the gas valve is allowed to open. Dust in the switch hose, a partially blocked flue, or a tired inducer bearing all produce a furnace that tries and gives up. This one is worth diagnosing properly rather than jumpering, because the switch is a safety interlock against venting failure.

High-Limit Trips From Restricted Airflow
A clogged filter or closed-off returns restrict airflow across the heat exchanger, temperatures climb past the limit switch setpoint, and the furnace shuts down on overheat. Homeowners typically report heat that works for ten minutes then stops, over and over. Fixing the airflow restriction is the actual repair; replacing the limit switch without doing so just removes the warning light.

Heat Pump Reversing Valve and Defrost Faults
For homes on heat pumps, no-heat almost always traces to a stuck reversing valve leaving the system in cooling mode, a failed defrost control board, or auxiliary heat strips that are not being called. The tell is an outdoor unit running while cool air comes out of the vents — which people frequently misdiagnose as a refrigerant problem.
