Why Two Identical Systems Perform Differently

Buy the same model number from two contractors and you can easily end up with two very different systems. Industry field studies have consistently found that a large share of installed residential systems never reach their rated efficiency — not because the equipment is bad, but because the charge is off, the airflow was never set, or the ducts leak into a superheated attic.

In the Phoenix Valley the penalty for a sloppy install is steeper than almost anywhere else. A charge that is 10% off is a rounding error in a mild climate. Here it shows up as a system that keeps up fine until about 108 degrees and then starts falling behind every afternoon, running continuously and never quite reaching setpoint.

So we install the way the manufacturer specifies and then prove it with measurements. Every install we complete gets a commissioning report showing airflow, static pressure, superheat and subcooling, and temperature split. It is not a marketing document. These are the steps most homeowners never see and never hear about. They are also the steps that determine whether your system is still comfortable in year twelve.

    Load Calculation and System Design

    A Manual J room-by-room load calculation determines capacity, and Manual D determines duct sizing for new duct systems. We look at window orientation, glass area, insulation levels, ceiling heights and whether ducts run through conditioned or unconditioned space. West-facing glass in the Valley is a bigger factor than most people expect, and it frequently changes the design.

    Brazing Under Flowing Nitrogen

    When copper is heated without nitrogen flowing through it, the inside of the line grows a layer of black cupric oxide scale that eventually breaks loose and circulates through the system, damaging the compressor and clogging the metering device. Purging with nitrogen while brazing prevents it entirely. It takes a few extra minutes per joint, and it is skipped constantly.

    Pressure Test and Deep Vacuum

    We pressure test with nitrogen to confirm there are no leaks before any refrigerant goes in, then evacuate the system to a deep vacuum measured with a micron gauge — not by watching a clock or a compound gauge. Vacuum boils moisture out of the lines; moisture left inside a refrigerant system forms acid and destroys compressors from the inside.

    Charge by Weight, Verify by Subcooling

    Refrigerant is weighed in per the manufacturer specification, adjusted for line-set length, then verified by subcooling and superheat readings under real operating conditions. "It feels cold at the vent" is not a charging method, and topping off until the gauges look about right is how systems end up chronically overcharged and inefficient.

    Airflow, Static Pressure and Commissioning

    The blower is set to deliver the specified CFM per ton, total external static pressure is measured to confirm the duct system can actually handle it, and the results are documented. If static pressure comes back too high, we address the duct restriction rather than letting the new equipment strangle itself for the next decade.

Straight Answers About New Installs

What is the difference between AC installation and AC replacement?

Replacement swaps equipment into an existing system with existing ducts, line set and electrical. Installation means putting cooling where there was none, or building the system out — new construction, an addition, a converted garage, or a home moving off evaporative cooling. Do I need a permit to install an AC in Phoenix?

Yes. Valley municipalities require a mechanical permit for new installations and changeouts, and the work is inspected. We pull the permit and handle inspection as part of the job. Unpermitted work can create problems at resale and can jeopardize a warranty claim.

How long does a new AC installation take?

A straightforward install using existing infrastructure is one day. New ductwork, a new electrical circuit, an evaporative conversion or a multi-zone system typically runs two to four days depending on scope.

Can you convert my swamp cooler to refrigerated air?

Yes, and it is common in older central Phoenix and West Valley homes. It involves designing and installing supply and return ducts, setting the condenser and indoor unit, running the line set and condensate drain, and adding the electrical circuit — quoted as one complete project.

What does commissioning mean?

It is the verification step after installation: measuring and setting airflow to spec, checking static pressure, weighing in the charge and verifying by subcooling, confirming temperature split, and documenting all of it. A system that was never commissioned can run for years well below its rated efficiency with nobody the wiser.
